What Are You Breathing?

You are what you breathe...

The above illustration shows common indoor dust particles that make up the air that you breathe.  It also shows what could be contained in the settled dust in a typical home, office or indoor space.  Many of the larger particles of 5 microns or larger usually settle out on surfaces and can be caught by most common air filters and pleated furnace filters.  However, many allergens and pathogens that are smaller than 2.5 microns in size can be inhaled deep into your respiratory system and lead to serious sinus and respiratory diseases.

We can help show you what you are breathing...don't take chances with your health.  Find out what you are breathing indoors.

Air Quality Testing - Good indoor air

Poor Ventilation

Poor ventilation in any home, whether it is a detached home, semi-detached residence or condominium apartment unit can lead to a build up of air pollutants such as dust, gases, chemicals and humidity.  Over time this can cause a variety of negative health issues.  Poor ventilation can also lead to an increase in CO2 (produced by people breathing) which causes headaches, nausea, irritability as well as odour perception and a feeling the there is something wrong with the indoor air quality.

Odours indoors are usually an indicator you're not getting enough fresh air.

Airborne Particulate

Airborne particulate can include bioaerosols (mould, bacteria and viruses) as well as household dust.  These can come from the HVAC system or ducts, vacuum cleaners, poor furnace filtration as well as contents and furnishings in the room or home.  Not all air filtration devices work as advertised.  In some cases air filtration devices and air filters actually pollute the home.  Air quality testing should include testing vacuum cleaners and air filtration devices to ensure they don't pollute the air.  An abundance of particulate can cause a variety of breathing and respiratory issues.

Do you have lots of dust settling on furniture?

VOC's

Volatile Organic Compounds can be emitted by decorating materials such as paint, adhesives and flooring as well as furniture and contents.  VOC testing is not always required but might be important in the case of a noticeable odour.

VOC's can be dangerous to your health or could just be a nuisance.  A VOC laboratory test can determine if the odour you smell is harmful.

Mold

Mold growth indoors can cause a variety of serious health issues for children, the elderly or a patient recovering from lung disease or any illness that can affect the immune system.  In some cases the mere presence of certain species of mold can be dangerous to your health.  In most cases a mold growth issue and resulting airborne mold spores are hidden with no sign of mold growth or musty odour.

If you have had any history of excessive moisture or water leaks, a mold inspection is highly recommended.

Bacteria (optional, additional testing required)

Bacterial issues in indoors can be extremely problematic for any occupant.  Serious infections and negative health issues can manifest when you have a bacterial infestation issue such as E.coli, coliform, enterobacter as well as Staphylococcus.  An Indoor air quality test specified for airborne and surface bacterial issues can determine these problems.

Allergens

Allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, rodent allergens as well as pollen and mould allergens can cause persistent allergic reactions indoors.

We now have a State-Of-The-Art assessment tool that can monitor the air you breathe over a 3-5 day period and provide with indoor allergen solutions.

If you feel better when away from your home, then this assessment is a definite must.  Note:  A full air quality and mould assessment is required prior to the 3-5 Day Allergen Assessment in order for us to be able to properly consult on remedies.

Our Indoor Air Quality Testing Process

Our job is to determine if you have good indoor air quality or poor indoor air quality.

  1. We start with some background information about your home and how you have been feeling when in the home.
  2. We then perform a detailed visual inspection of the home for sources of poor air quality.
  3. We use calibrated instruments to check for temperature, relative humidity, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, VOC's, formaldehyde and airborne dust and particulate.
  4. We can also send air samples to laboratories to see what is in the airborne and settled dust(fibres/mould).
  5. We also use moisture meters and a thermal imaging camera to test for hidden moisture issues.
  6. We issue a detailed and easy to understand and implement written report on how to improve your indoor air quality.
  7. We then follow up with you to answer any questions you may have.
